Imagine a world more open to refugees

Today is the most important day in the lives of Refugees. Why? Because tomorrow never comes. It is today that they are forced to flee war, persecution and violence. It is today that they need safety and assurance that other human beings stand with them. Among the basic needs of refugee families today is a safe place to live. In reality, this should not be classified as a need, but as a basic human right which applies to all human beings today.

Refugee families equal ordinary people. This simple fact seems to have been forgotten. They are not beggars, competitors for jobs or terrorists – but genuine human beings like you and me whose lives have been disrupted by war, persecution and violence.

It is horrific that people are drowning and suffocating to reach safety. Hearing the plight of refugees over and over again, we tend to strip away their humanity. We stop imagining them as being human like us. This is the sad part of our nature – dehumanise refugees as numbers and statistics, leaving a false impression that it will only happen again. To counteract this, we need to show the reality of refugees: their names, their faces, their ambitions and their fears, their loves, what they fled.

This VIDEO explains five facts you need to know about the state of displacement.

Instead of burden sharing, nations are closing their borders and political paralysis is spreading. In addition, racist rhetoric seems not only to be on the rise, but is also becoming more socially and politically acceptable.

What would the world be like if we opened our doors to refugees? Refugees have no choice but to leave home. We believe all refugees deserve a safe place to live, work and call home. Why not welcome a refugee in your community and help them to thrive, not just survive.

Christians must ask themselves, “What is human nature? What does the Bible say about human nature?”

The Bible teaches that God created human beings in His image. This means that He enables us to have some understanding of Him and of His vast and complex design. Our human nature reflects some of God’s attributes, although in a limited way. We love because we are made in the image of the God who is love (1 John 4:16). Because we are created in His image, we can be compassionate, faithful, truthful, kind, patient, and just.

In short, God has given us the tools to make a difference. His only question to us is “How much do you love me?”
