Sex Education Damaging Children

Dear Friends for Life:  “Some parents and educators believe that a child is like a huge container. To insure the child’s success, they think it their job to fill it up with as much information as possible, as quickly as possible. This misconception is damaging the brilliance of millions of our youth.” JW Wilson, Advanced Learning Institute

There is a trend today to pass laws and guidelines in schools for the few without sufficient data on what effects they’ll have on the many. A large majority of students are forced to bow and accept without question the unproven claims of a very small minority. This approach to sex education ignores the stages of development which encourage youth to jump from concrete concepts to abstract concepts before they are ready. For instance, government agencies, educational journalists, academics, and do-gooders seem to be hell-bent on informing children about issues that they are neither intellectually, physically or emotionally equipped to handle.

Here are just a few examples:

1. “Alberta Institutes New Guidelines to Make Schools Inclusive for Homosexual and Transgender Students.” – The government in Alberta, Canada released the guidelines for the purpose of making schools more inclusive for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer, questioning, and/or gender-diverse” children. Among the new guidelines is one that allows for children to pick their own pronouns and requires staff members to respect those choices. Read more here.

2. “Massachusetts Bill that Would Ban Sexual Orientation Change Effort Therapy for Youth Stalled.” – Bill H97 would make it illegal for licensed therapists to provide treatment to minors for unwanted same-sex attraction. The bill has been held in the legislature. Sexual Orientation Change Effort (SOCE) Therapy has helped many people to reorient their sexual orientation from a homosexual attraction to a heterosexual attraction. Read more here.

3. “Parents in Omaha Outraged by Proposed Sex-Ed Curriculum.” – School board meetings in Omaha, Nebraska have been crowded with parents, students and concerned members of the community as school board members contemplate the first update in three decades of the school district’s sex education curriculum. The updates would add discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in 7th and 8th grades, and discussion of abortion and emergency contraception in 10th-grade. Read more here.

Surprisingly, parents are not consulted on these major decisions. Confusion in the minds of children results and they slide into a world of fantasy – “anything goes” – without any boundaries or responsibilities. For example, a male-student can state “I am a woman”. This claim, without any medical or scientific acknowledgement, gives him the right to enter locker rooms, showers, and bathrooms which are reserved for female students. Walking around with a naked male body in front of young girls not only infringes on their basic human rights to privacy as women but causes lifelong psychological damage. A young girl’s mind can absorb only so much. Forced to study and witness this in school should be considered a crime against humanity. It’s like trying to pour a bucket of water into a drinking glass.

The result for parents is an epidemic of mental illness as children struggle with ‘too much sex information’ or ‘too much, too soon’, with an increased in depression or, in the extreme, appalling manifestations of sexual crimes committed by children often against other children and suicide.

Is it not time for parents to stand up as a group and say “NO” to this type of sex education. The parents have an innate right to form the souls of their children. The parents are the primary educators. The state is not. Period.

In nearly every document of the Church that addresses education, the primacy of parents is emphasized over and over. Pope Francis spoke on the importance of parents as educators: “It is time for fathers and mothers to return from their exile – for they have exiled themselves from bringing up their children – and to fully resume their educational role … don’t provoke your children by asking of them things they can’t do … this needs to be done so that children can grow up to be responsible for themselves and for others.”

What we hear from the Apostle Paul is very beautiful: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged” (Col 3:20-21).
