Solution: Transgender Locker Room

36393293-abstract-man-or-woman-androgyn-watercolor-consept-portrait-isolated-on-white-backgroundDear Friends for Life:   This morning I ran across a thought-provoking article: “Woman Complains About Transgender Person in Locker Room, Gets ‘Scary’ Response Back” A woman, a member of a fitness center, complained to the office that a transgender man was using the women’s locker room. The response of the gym was quick. They kicked her out of the gym by cancelling her membership. “Wait a minute!” was my first reaction.

Who is a transgender person? Who is a woman? And what is the meaning of women’s locker room? First: a Transgender Person is identify as one who is born with typical male or female anatomies but feels as though they’ve been born into the “wrong body.” Second: a Woman, Female, Lady are nouns referring to adult human beings who are biologically capable of bearing offspring. Third: Women’s Locker Room? A specified area (room) for women who can disrobe, dress, shower and be naked in front of other women.

A person enters this world as a man or a woman; therefore, the term Transgender Person is incorrect. Correctly stated: the person, in the above article, is either a transgender man or an adult male man as distinguished from a boy or a woman. The species Homo Sapiens has only two sexes: male and female.

Born a male with male genitals, the above person feels that this is a false or incomplete description of himself. Thus, it appears that this term transgender man is based on a feeling rather than on natural law. In the above article, the transgender person feels he is female; therefore, he demands the right to enter the specified area reserved for women – Women’s Locker Room.

Claiming this as a right is not logical. It implies that women are expected to change who they are (physically, spiritually, psychologically, and mentally) based on the feelings of one man. Our current permissive society is manufacturing tons of rights. A right to satisfy the moment. Not to mention the fact that most of these rights end up being only temporary, yet laws are being passed, laws forcing people to change or be prosecuted. All this based on feeling.

Judging from Wikipedia, there are so many different explanations of transgender that the definition of the term has no boundaries. Consequently, the laws being passed are so vague that transgender people have complete freedom to do what they feel. Even if they step on the rights of other people.

lavender-sunrise-dramatic-clouds-over-field-42517507Being a human being, a transgender man has the rights that all men have who belong to the species of Homo Sapiens. I love and respect transgender people. We all must love and respect them. This does not mean we have to condone their actions, especially when they infringe on the rights of women as in the article, rights which are created by God, by Natural Law.

We do not have to change who we are because of a person’s feelings. My recommendation is to create a third room: Transgender Locker Room. Then transgender people don’t have to tear down the male-female mystery; they just participate in it in a different way.

How should Catholics respond? The gender confusion and sexual brokenness that we see all around us, in which people feel alienated from or in conflict with their bodies, is a sign of a deeply hurting world.

We need to do something in the lives of real suffering people. This requires not just talk, but an encounter with actual persons – persons who struggle with gender-identity confusion or sexual brokenness – and actively listening to their needs and concerns. We must defend their authentic rights; protect them from cruel, dehumanizing acts; pray for them; and help them to know the father’s plan for how he created them.

“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope”  (Jeremiah 29:11, NRSV).
