Surrogacy in Illegal Human Trafficking

Surrogacy-IndustryDear Friends for Life:   It’s a fact that surrogacy is on the rise. At the heart of this current issue, we must choose between competing visions of a woman and her body. Shall we uncritically submit to the demands of individual liberty no matter what the social cost? Or shall we agree that there are limits to individual freedom when others are vulnerable and weak?

Sweden’s leading feminist have taken a public stand. The group feels that surrogacy is a business which trades in women’s bodies and threatens their basic human rights and bodily integrity. Click here to read article.

On the world scene, most cases involve purchasers from Western countries and surrogates from Third World countries. Those having money preying on the socially vulnerable poor who are forced to sell their bodies.

images-4(6)A study of surrogate mothers in Anand, India, revealed that 50 percent were illiterate and that many could not read the contract that they were signing. In developed countries, would such contracts be legal?

The Swedish feminist group continues: “The purchasers often make demands on how the surrogate mother lives her life, for example regarding her diet, exercise and sexual activity. Her life is best described as temporary serfdom, since the woman no longer has the right to decide over her own body and lifestyle.”

20080513_BodyShoppingcoverDr. Dianne Irving Ph.D. commenting on the above article points out that the “surrogate issues” is also closely related to human trafficking of children: “…the issue of forced/coerced commercial surrogacy in illegal human trafficking begs for attention as well. The global forced implantation of either “normal” or “experimentally reproduced” (e.g., by human genetic engineering) human embryos into kidnapped women is at least as urgent as the issues well-articulated in the article below. Where are the efforts on behalf of not just the women but also the children involved? What happens to them? How many are then killed for their organs or tissues (e.g., female embryos, fetuses and infants contain all the “eggs” they will have), sold in illegal adoptions and to whom, etc.?  See recent Dutch report on the use of “forced surrogacy” in human trafficking:Trafficking in human beings for the purpose of the removal of organs and forced commercial surrogacy (2012)“.

A relatively new human rights violation, the surrogacy issue demands that our voices be heard in order to protect the human rights of “socially vulnerable poor” women and children from exploitation by greedy businesses and selfish individuals.

God Bless

Nowadays the part of a man that a man does assert is exactly the part he ought not to assert – himself. The part he doubts is exactly the part he ought not to doubt – the Divine Reason.” –G.K.
