Wake-up call for Pakistan

Long-live-Pakistan copy(1)Wake-up call for Pakistan: Respect and love your children, your young people, your future. The suffering and horror stories of young boys and girls coming out of the country recently reveal a society daily mistreating and physically crippling its most innocent and vulnerable members.

education(1)Did you know that Pakistan has the second largest number of out-of-school children in any country – nearly 25 million. Of these, seven million are of primary school-age and 60 percent are girls. A current fact reported by UNICEF.

child_abuseDid you know that current sexual abuse within the family structure is at an alarming high. According to media reports, sexual abuse is not uncommon in Pakistan and ranges from harassment to incest within the family. This is an issue people cover up because of the social stigma and pressures involved. A simple search on Google produces pages of daily sufferings (both physical and psychological) of children longing only for a father and mother’s love.

stoprape copyRecent studies by human rights groups found that the police are reluctant to believe stories about incest and accuse the victims of lying or having somehow brought the crime upon themselves.

An article I just posted last night on my Catholic LifeIssues website actually brought tears to my eyes. The headlines read: PAKISTAN: A Minor’s Arms Chopped Off by Landlord, Police Unresponsive until Media Coverage. The child belongs to a poor family, has been deprived of basic medical treatment and the right to register a legal case in the police station. In Pakistan, the powerful and rich people know how to manipulate the law in their favour and escape prosecution.

handschopedThe Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) reported that the arms of a 10-year-old child were chopped off by a landlord over a minor issue with his father’s payment of electricity bills. His hands were tied and were put in a harvesting machine.

Pakistani young are targets of a sick segment of adult society. Only our voice can make a difference. Follow the suggested action posted in the article on my website. Together, let’s make protecting Pakistan children our top priority this week.

God Bless
